All noted as Irish but having checked they were not – they were English from Burnley. Mary, Robert and Matilda Crabtree on the R Robinson arrived 28th August 1856 all Irish. Philadelphia. The brother, after much searching, was James Crabtree born Barnoldswick England. There is no mention of his burial at sea and I doubt his body would have been returned to England. Also on the list of Medals given to those serving in New Zealand, it would appear that John Charles Crabtree received no medals.

ROBERSON Relation Other Father’s Birthplace IRE Mother’s Birthplace IRE Census Place Dublin, Pulaski, Virginia On April 29^th 2011 Peter Crabtree in Canada found an entry for the 1851 Census Canada This could be John Crabtree born 1787 and left Ireland aged 14. He may have used England as his country of birth due to Loyalist leanings? Peter Crabtree information: John is listed in the 1851 census for Ontario living in East York (now part of Greater Toronto). He was 65 years of age, had been born in England. (This is the record you had found.) Also in the house were Robert Crabtree (blacksmith) who, I am assuming, was his son, 31 years of age, had been born in England; and Robert’s wife Betsy, 27 years of age, had been born in Ireland. The 1871 census for East York lists Robert (blacksmith) and his wife Elizabeth, both stated to be 51 years of age and born in England and Ireland respectively. According to the registrations of deaths in Ontario, Robert died on 30 Jan 1899 and the age of 79 years.

Hugh Crabtree

Hugh Crabtree – Born 1761 Ireland Throughout this journey I have learned of our Hugh Crabtree born 1761 who married in Ireland and fathered 6 children. In fighting for the rights of the Irish he was sentenced to Life in Port Jackson Australia in 1798 He left Ireland in 1800 and arrived on The Anne in 1801. Thereafter he farmed near the Hawkesbury River at Pitt Town New South Wales. Hugh had a hard life; he received a Conditional Pardon 1804 so could never return to Ireland. I do not know what happened to his wife Margaret (Bagnor) Crabtree in Ireland, but I have found two of his daughters who married here. The sons and one other daughter I have yet to find. Someone out there must have – Hugh, James, Margaret or John in their tree. Hugh found companionship in Australia with another exile from County Armagh Northern Ireland; her name was either Sarah or Anne Wilson. I cannot trace her family. She was convicted in Armagh and sentenced to 7 years in Port Jackson. During the various musters Anne was with Hugh and then prior to the 1828 muster she disappears. Hugh’s story is sad. To my knowledge there was no issue for Hugh and Anne so the line died out there. However he was the first Crabtree to set foot on that warm and welcoming soil. One day I hope to find out where Hugh is buried. One day I hope to find the rest of his Irish family. More on Hugh Crabtree which was brought to light by Ian Beckett – through his kind forays into the records of NSW he has been enlightening as to Hugh Crabtree and his wife/girlfriend Anne/Sarah Wilson who arrived on The Experiment in 1809 aged 18 years – she was convicted in County Armagh in 1806 – of what we are unsure. However she may have been sent to Hugh to help on the farm although the Pioneer Register shows her as being married to Hugh. Whether his wife in Ireland was dead or whether once out of their native country the laws of Bigamy no longer existed is a moot point.
